Discord is back to normal after a major outage left users unconnected

by GizmoShot | Published On January 27, 2022

Mass disruptions force gamers off the platform.

what you need to know

  • For many users, Discord has failed.
  • The outage began around noon Pacific Time and lasted for several hours.
  • Discord says it has fixed the issue and users should be able to log back in.

Discord users were left out in the cold on Wednesday when one of the best messaging apps suddenly became unusable. As it turned out, the massive outage left many users unable to log in.

The outage began sometime before noon Pacific Time. Since then, Discord has kept users up to date with any updates on Twitter and its status page, and earlier said it found and was working to fix the problem.

As of 2:19pm PT, an update was posted on Twitter notifying users that the chat app should be backed up and that users should be able to log in.

Hey @EveryoneConnect should be fully restored now! Hope you touched the grass a little while we were out. thank you for your patience. https://t.co/smYJJdJm3e pic.twitter.com/fx35pnU3eW

That said, the company has more clarification on its status page that some features may be temporarily limited due to some workarounds:

monitor – We have completely removed all rate limiting and Discord is almost back to normal.

Over the next hour, some Discord servers may continue to see some issues interacting with bots using slash commands. As part of resolving the incident, we needed to reduce the load on the database, and we shut down parts of the slash command system.

We’ll be going through our internal postmortem process to really gain insight and understand exactly what’s going on here, but we apologize for the inconvenience if you’re unable to log in today or have other issues.

Fortunately, the outage lasted only a few hours, unlike some of the major outages we’ve seen with Facebook and Amazon Web Services in recent months. With any luck, Discord can pinpoint the problem and prevent it from happening again.
