Does PS5 VR (PS VR2) support room scale tracking? Let’s discuss!

by GizmoShot | Published On January 23, 2022

Best answer: Yes. The PlayStation VR2 has four cameras on the headset for tracking, and the PS VR2 Sense controller has tracking strips. This allows for room-scale tracking, but players are still limited by the USB-C cable connecting the PS VR2 to the PS5.

PS5 VR Room Scale Tracking: walk

One of the biggest obstacles to full immersion in the original PSVR is the limited range of motion options. While some of the best PSVR accessories, like the PlayStation Aim controller, enable unique experiences that make certain VR games feel very realistic, you’re still only able to move so far or turn so much before being yelled at by the game Call. Other VR systems like the Oculus Quest 2 let players play anywhere and move as they please, so it makes sense that PlayStation gamers would expect PS5 VR or PS VR2 to work the same way.

At CES 2022, PlayStation announced that the PS VR will use inside-out tracking instead of the outside-in approach used by the PSVR, with four cameras on the headset. In addition to the headset, Sony also detailed new PS5 VR controllers, and the new tracking methods for those controllers should allow for room-scale tracking.

These new controllers feature a unique ring-shaped design that creates a halo around your hand and wrist as you hold each controller. With the rings, Sony says the headset can track these controllers, meaning Sony’s approach to tracking is similar to the Oculus Quest and Rift S-series products. Inside-out tracking is just a fancy term that means VR headsets have cameras on them that track the controller and the space around it.

It goes without saying that if Sony uses the camera on the headset to track controllers in 3D space, there’s no reason Sony shouldn’t use the same camera to track your position in the room. The original PSVR used a dual-camera solution located below the TV, making it nearly as accurate as your eyes in stereo. The problem here is that it doesn’t move with you and doesn’t see all the room angles, limiting its range of movement.

The cameras on the PS5 VR headset will be able to accurately track your every movement, from crouching to dodging enemy fire, bending over under a table for hidden clues, or grabbing another quiver from your back arrow.

The only limitation of the PS VR2 is that it still connects players to the PS5 via a single USB-C cable. While this is an impressive improvement over the original PSVR — it required a two-plug cable to connect to the processor unit, plus a few extra wires — many gamers want to hear that the PS5 VR will be Completely wireless.

While we only know of a wired version of the PS5 VR, there’s no reason to think Sony won’t offer some sort of wireless version. Whether this comes as a premium model that costs extra or is an optional accessory attached to the PS VR2 is anyone’s best guess. Regardless of these options, having any model with a cable means there’s bound to be some range of movement, even if it just means you can’t venture more than 15 feet away from the PS5 at any given point in time. Still, it should stay Make enough room to move any room you are in.
