The device will allegedly be called the Pixel Notepad.
what you need to know
- Google has reportedly picked a name for its rumored foldable smartphone.
- The device may be called the “Pixel Notepad,” although Google is reportedly considering naming it “The Journal.”
- It is rumored to be significantly cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Despite earlier rumors that Google has abandoned its Pixel Fold plans, there are strong signs that it is ready to foray into the foldable space. The latest Android 12L beta contains hints about what Google’s foldable device will look like, giving us some OPPO Find N feel. A new report sheds light on its name and price point.
According to 9to5Google, the search giant’s foldable phone will be called the “Pixel Notepad” instead of the Pixel Fold, which is rumored to be canceled. Display Supply Chain Consultants analyst Ross Young revealed late last year that Google abandoned plans to release a foldable device in 2022 due to a lack of confidence that the device would be a serious challenger to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.
The Pixel Notepad moniker is said to be a valid brand name for the phone. However, Google reportedly considered calling the device a “log” before coming up with the name.
In terms of pricing, 9to5Google claims the device will cost less than some of the best foldable phones on the market, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3. That means the Notepad will sell for less than $1,799.
Given the high cost of making these devices, it’s unclear how Google intends to launch a relatively inexpensive foldable phone. This is one of the main challenges facing OEMs such as TCL, which recently shelved its foldable phone project until prices can be lowered.
It may take some time for Google to bring the foldable phone to market. A source familiar with Google’s plans previously told Android Central that the project will be released in 2023.
With the likes of OPPO, Xiaomi, Huawei and Motorola taking on Samsung in the foldable space, it makes sense for Google to join the fray.
