Here’s how to set up smart lights in the Alexa app

by GizmoShot | Published On February 7, 2022

People often choose one of the many great Alexa speakers on the market as a stepping stone to building a smart home—why not? Once you’ve set up your smart speaker, perhaps the easiest next step to create the perfect smart home is to add smart lights to the Alexa app.

How to Set Up Smart Lights in the Alexa App

When it comes to picking the best smart lights for your house, you’ll find that there are many different form factors and prices to choose from. Once you’ve found the right light for you, you’ll need to set it up in the companion app for the brand you’ve purchased. For example, if you buy a Philips Hue light, you first add it to the Hue app, Govee and Govee apps, and so on. With that part out of the way, it’s time to add it to your Alexa app.

  1. Open Alexa app on your phone.
  2. tap equipment at the bottom of the screen.
  3. choose ➕ in the upper right corner of the screen.
  4. choose Add device.

  5. pick Light.
  6. Scroll the list and select Bulb brand you are setting.
  7. tap device discovery Your bulb has been added to the brand’s companion app.

  8. After Alexa finds your device, select Next.
  9. Select the newly discovered device you want to set up first, then click Set up the device.
  10. Select the group to add the light to, then click add to group. If you do not want to add it to the group, select jump over.

  11. tap continue.
  12. again, click continue.

If you added multiple devices and the Alexa app found them in step 8, you’ll continue with the process of setting up additional lights in step 9.

Once your lights are set up in the Alexa app, you can start controlling your lights with Amazon Alexa. That means you can turn lights off and on with just your voice, automate them with schedules and routines, and more. If you have multiple Alexa-enabled smart speakers, once you add your smart lights to the Alexa app, you have full control over your smart lights, whether you’re using the small but mighty Echo Dot or the larger Echo Show 15.
