Meta doubles down on Oculus Quest rebrand, and everyone hates it

by GizmoShot | Published On January 27, 2022

“Meta Quest” is so fascinating.

what you need to know

  • Meta changed its VR-branded social media accounts to Meta Quest.
  • The change follows a company name change announced by Meta in late 2021.
  • Nobody liked it then, and nobody likes it now.

Facebook, or Yuanas it now likes to be called, is rebranding its popular Oculus Quest 2 VR headset, changing the beloved’s name to “Meta Quest.”

A cursory glance at all of the Quest’s renamed social media accounts reveals the same memes highlighting the decision between Oculus and Meta Quest. Probably because Meta thought it was funny to make fun of us and soften it in an attempt to get us to agree to the name change. Well, Meta was wrong.

Reactions on social media suggested that fans didn’t find it funny at all, with people criticizing the move as a betrayal of the brand, with some asking why the company couldn’t just keep the Oculus name under the Meta branding as it did with Instagram and Facebook. Use with other products such as WhatsApp. Others just make fun of it.

9to5Google senior editor Ben Schoon summed up the response to the rebrand perfectly in three words:

no one likes this

Others were more vocal about their dislike of the rebrand, prompting a response from the social team in an attempt to calm them down:

We hear your voice. We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and it’s a very difficult move. As we change hardware brands, Oculus will continue to be a core part of our DNA and will continue to exist in areas such as software and development tools.

On Facebook (the app) it’s not much better. Fans have compared the new “Meta Quest” name to something that sounds very wrong.

One response suggested that the name change was an attempt to free brands from negative reviews of Facebook and how it handles consumer data:

Our Nick Sutrich pointed to this as a possible reason for the rebrand, explaining that it was the first step in decoupling the best VR headsets from Facebook. He highlighted other moves the company is taking, such as removing the Facebook login requirement. However, he noted that Meta will need more than a name change to clean up its reputation.

Not to mention, Meta loses a lot of search traffic in the process:

By changing the Oculus brand to Meta on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, they took a huge risk in terms of discoverability. With Playstation VR2 looming, their timing wasn’t the best.

Whatever the real reason, the move left a bad taste in the mouths of fans, which may take us a while to chew and swallow.
