You should always use a cooler on your PS5 SSD

by GizmoShot | Published On February 20, 2022

You should always use a heatsink on your PS5 SSD. Just make sure it’s compatible in the first place.

While you can technically install an SSD without a heatsink in the PS5, it’s high It is recommended that you purchase a built-in heatsink or buy one separately to add. As good as the PS5’s fan cooling is, it can still get pretty warm, and only with the addition of an SSD in the internal expansion slot. So if you’re wondering if you should use a heatsink, the answer is almost always yes (provided you’re using one that doesn’t already have one built in), and they’re pretty cheap from places like Amazon.

Since SSDs with heatsinks tend to be more expensive and sell out faster, it may be easier for you to buy a standard M.2 SSD and install the heatsink on it yourself. You just need to make sure that the SSD you buy meets Sony’s requirements. Thankfully, the best PS5 SSDs are from well-known brands and work well.

Specification Require
interface PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
capacity 250GB – 4TB
cooling structure Heat sink (single or double sided)
Sequential read speed 5,500MB/s or faster
Module width 22mm wide
Constituents M.2 Types 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110
socket size Socket 3 (Key M)
length 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm
high less than 11.25 mm
Overall dimensions with cooling structure Less than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H)

The bigger question when adding a heatsink to a PS5 SSD is whether it should be single-sided or double-sided. While Sony says the single-sided construction is easier to fit in an expansion slot, the double-sided heatsink still works perfectly. In practice, they don’t make much of a difference, so it all depends on what works best with the particular SSD you have.

Sony provides single-sided and double-sided heat sinks and their size specifications to facilitate users to select suitable heat sinks.

Get the job well done

Compatible with the excellent Samsung 850 EVO SSD, this double-sided heatsink is perfect for the PS5. If you need to add a heatsink to your SSD, this is what you want, with 10°C – 25°C (50°F – 77°F) cooling.
