Alphabet reports more than $75 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, record Pixel sales

The Pixel finally had its moment to shine.

What you need to know

  • Alphabet reported fourth-quarter financial earnings on Tuesday.
  • The company’s fourth-quarter revenue topped $75 billion, nearly doubling its annual revenue.
  • CEO Sundar Pichai noted that Pixel’s quarterly sales hit an all-time high.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported fourth-quarter financial earnings on Tuesday, with revenue of more than $75 billion. Much of that came from Google’s search business and advertising, but the Pixel 6 managed to pull it off.

Unsurprisingly, search was the largest contributor, bringing in more than $43 billion, with YouTube advertising managing more than $8.6 billion. This comes shortly after the company announced that its ever-growing YouTube Shorts hit a staggering 5 trillion views. The company has been pumping money into media through programs like the Shorts Creator Fund, which helps creators make money from their content through high-profile Shorts.

Google is also winding down YouTube Originals content as it shifts its focus to helping creators.

As for Google Cloud, Alphabet continues to pump money into the business at a loss, although it sees some upside this year as losses narrow. The segment also saw an increase in revenue for the quarter compared to third-quarter 2021 earnings. In the fourth quarter, however, the segment’s operating loss increased by $890 million from the previous quarter, still an improvement compared to the same period a year earlier.

CEO Sundar Pichai noted in a press release that while the phones were relatively hard to come by early on due to chip shortages, the company’s latest Pixel phones managed to beat the odds with a record quarter:

“Our deep investments in AI technology continue to deliver extraordinary and rewarding experiences for people and businesses, including our most important products. In the fourth quarter, our advertising business continued to grow strongly, helping millions of businesses thrive and find New customers, record quarterly sales Despite supply constraints, our Pixel phones continued to grow strongly, and our cloud business continued to grow strongly.
