BlackBerry operating system phones will stop “reliable” work after January 4

by GizmoShot | Published On January 3, 2022

All traditional BlackBerry services will be terminated this week.

What you need to know

  • Traditional BlackBerry devices will be scrapped on January 4.
  • Devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier may no longer be able to reliably make calls, access data, or send text messages.
  • BlackBerry Android devices will not be affected by the company’s infrastructure service EOL.

BlackBerry is about to put the last nail in the coffin of its traditional equipment. As the company announced in September last year, after January 4, 2022, the old services applicable to BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier will no longer be provided.

All BlackBerry devices running older versions of software and services may no longer be able to perform basic functions, such as making phone calls, sending text messages, or dialing 9-1-1. Users will also not be able to access data through Wi-Fi or their operators.

On the other hand, the best Android phones for BlackBerry will continue to work after the EOL date. However, if you still receive a redirect email sent to an email address hosted by BlackBerry, you need to transfer to a new email address.

BlackBerry dominated the US market before Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, and is now mainly a “cyber security company.” Just a few months after TCL released the BlackBerry Key2 LE, BlackBerry completed its $1.4 billion acquisition of the artificial intelligence network security company Cylance.

As early as August 2020, the BlackBerry brand was licensed by a Texas startup company called OnwardMobility. This startup has promised to launch a new Android BlackBerry phone with QWERTY keyboard and 5G support in 2021, but since it launched the “pre-commitment” plan, we have not heard anything about the device.

Google’s vanilla Pixel 6 is a high-end Android phone with great value and a first-class camera. Like all other Pixel devices, it also provides smooth performance and an excellent software experience.
