Google TV may soon block some adult content from autoplaying

The launcher can also add kids profiles and watchlists for free Google TV channels.

what you need to know

  • Google appears to be working on a “restricted mode” for Google TV that will filter out content deemed inappropriate for children.
  • The launcher may also add watchlist functionality for kids profiles and other free streaming content.
  • These changes were found in code strings as part of the latest Google TV update.

Google will soon make many of the best streaming experiences on Android TV safer for younger viewers. The search giant is apparently working on a new feature for Google TV that will prevent adult content from autoplaying on the home screen.

9to5Google has discovered a new content filter feature dubbed “Restricted Mode” in the latest update to the Android TV launcher. As the name suggests, the feature will make it a breeze to hide age-inappropriate content from kids.

However, Restricted Mode only seems to work for ad-supported free movies and TV shows and their trailers. To unlock this setting, you need a PIN code.

Some strings in the launcher’s new update also refer to “Google TV Channels,” which could be a reference to additional free content. With its Pluto TV alliance, Google TV already allows you to stream over 300 live TV channels for free.

Another interesting feature found by 9to5 is the watchlist section for children’s profiles on Google TV, which was launched earlier last year. You can view our detailed guide to setting up a child profile here. While the launcher already has robust parental controls, there is currently no way for children to add content to a dedicated destination on the home screen.

These features are expected to improve the home screen experience on Google TV. That said, there’s still no word on when Google will roll out Personalized Profiles, a feature long overdue after a delay late last year.
