Here’s everything we know (so far) about Ghostwire: Tokyo

by GizmoShot | Published On February 17, 2022

What is Ghostwire: Tokyo? There are many unknowns, but in all the best possible ways, it looks mysterious and creepy.

At Bethesda’s E3 2019 press conference, they showed off two brand new IPs, one of which is called Ghostwire: Tokyo. Creative Director Ikumi Nakamura took to the stage with confidence, enthusiasm and sincerity, instantly captivating audiences and contrasting deeply with the horror and dark aesthetic of the trailer she led. Whatever Ghostwire: Tokyo really is, the concepts presented in the CGI video look incredible.

Since then, more news has been revealed, including some important footage since Sony’s June 2020 PS5 showcase of the “future of gaming.” Nakamura is no longer involved in the project; Kenji Kimura is now director, and the game is exclusive to the limited-time console. Here’s what we know about Ghostwire right now: Tokyo.

what is Ghost Line: Tokyo?

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a new game that Tango Gameworks showed off at Bethesda’s E3 2019 press conference, and more details will be revealed as the PS5 debuts in 2020. Tango Gameworks is a studio founded in 2010 by Capcom veteran Shinji Mikami. The studio is known for its work on The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, and Mikami himself worked on Capcom’s Resident Evil. So you know this game is going to be very creepy!

what’s the story Ghost Line: Tokyo?

Ghostwire: Tokyo takes place in (surprise!) Tokyo, where suddenly 99% of the population disappears without warning or explanation, leaving clothes behind in a Rapture-like incident. As the protagonist, Akito, you are still a strange evil force arriving in the city, which may be responsible for the disappearance. With these disappearances, Akito gained unusual powers, even as spirits known as yokai began to appear throughout the city. Your job is to track it down and use your own “spectral” abilities to fight the darkness.

In our Ghostwire: Tokyo preview, we saw about 30 minutes of hands-off footage and found that while it’s not a horror game, it’s still creepy, well worth checking out, and could end up being the best PS5 game ever one of the available.

Ghosts aren’t the only newcomers on the street. There is also a masked group wearing Prajna masks called the Visitors. Their roles in the story are shrouded in mystery.

Ghost Line: Tokyo Gameplay

This isn’t a survival horror game like The Evil Within, albeit with some eerie elements. It’s a first-person action game that sees you fighting different powerful spirits with your supernatural abilities. Each spirit has different strengths and weaknesses, so each battle will require your careful consideration. The tagline for the game is, “Don’t be afraid of the unknown. Attack it.” We also know a few other tidbits.

  • Three spirits have been announced: Amewarashi, Shiromuku and Kuchisake.
  • You attack with air, water and fire.
  • The game is designed to support 3D audio.
  • It also supports the PS5 DualSense controller with haptic feedback for special effects that convey different special abilities.

“We’re particularly excited that players will be able to experience our modern, tourist-filled city in 3D,” said Kenji Kimura, Game Director at Ghostwire: Tokyo. “This version of Tokyo is not the one you’ve seen or heard before. In Ghostwire: Tokyo, you’ll hear and encounter sounds that you wouldn’t normally hear in a city in real life. We hope that through 3D sounds, you feel compelled to find out and determine what is causing the sounds you’re hearing.”

Each of these “visitors” is designed to be disturbing, and some of the genres include a group of headless high school students, dolls following the weather charm of teru teru bozu, and finally the creepy faceless skinny man with an umbrella .

Ghost Line: Tokyo let you have a dog

Technically, it’s part of the gameplay, but it’s so important that it deserves its own part. Tango Gameworks has confirmed that you can pet all dogs in Ghostwire: Tokyo:

Yes Ghost Line: Tokyo Open world?

Many players wonder if the game takes place in an open world. We’re not sure this is a true open world right now, but given what we’ve seen so far, it seems possible. At the very least, players have open space to explore.

The studio’s previous game, The Evil Within 2, was semi-open, giving players some large areas to explore, but still maintaining a relatively simple main path.

Why Nakamura Yumi Leaving Tango Gameworks?

On September 4, 2019, Creative Director Nakamura announced that she was leaving Tango Gameworks after 9 years at the studio. It’s unclear why she decided to leave; however, she’s been touring different studios around the world, so maybe she just needs time to figure out what she wants to do.

It’s Ghost Line: Tokyo PS5 exclusive ?

Currently, Ghostwire: Tokyo has been announced as a PS5 console exclusive. Despite Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the deal is still going through, meaning Bethesda Softworks is now part of the Xbox First Party Group. It will only be available on PS5 and PC for a limited time before launching on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at a later date.

With that in mind, Xbox head Phil Spencer said that Bethesda games will be exclusive to the Xbox Game Pass platform in the future.

It’s Ghost Line: Tokyo Cancel?

No, the game wasn’t canceled despite the departure of creative director Nakamura. The Evil Within’s creative director Shinji Mikami has taken over as Ghostwire: Tokyo’s general executive producer, while Kenji Kimura is directing.

When is Ghost Line: Tokyo’s release date ?

Ghostwire: Tokyo is currently set to release on March 25, 2022. It was supposed to come to PS5 and PC sometime in 2021, as the disclaimer text in the CES 2021 showcase video suggested the game would be released in October 2021, but that has been canceled. Due to the lingering effects of the pandemic, the game has been delayed until early 2022 to ensure the health and safety of developers while polishing the game as much as possible.

Since it’s a one-year limited-time console, it’ll be coming to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S sometime in late 2023, roughly a full year after launching on PS5 and PC.
