How to Set Up Space Sense on Oculus Quest 2

by GizmoShot | Published On January 8, 2022

Using the Quest 2 in a public space can lead to disaster if a person or pet accidentally enters your circle of guardians. Thankfully, Meta has developed Space Sense, a new detection system that makes people visible when they get too close. It’s an experimental, underdeveloped system, and it’s hard to find if you don’t know where to look. Here’s how to use Space Sense on Oculus Quest 2.

How to turn on Oculus Quest 2 Space Sense

  1. Press to enter the main menu Oculus button on the right controller.
  2. choose Quick Setup on the left General menu.

  3. From there, select set up in the upper right corner of the menu.

  4. Next, select Experimental setup.

  5. scroll down until you find Sense of space. Select this option, then Open this function. You have activated spatial awareness!

Space Sense can record any person or object up to 9 feet (2.74 meters) away in your guardian’s area, and the color changes from blue to pink to red depending on the distance of the object. They appear as colorful cartoon outlines when you look in a direction they can’t ignore. So even a small thing like a cat should be fully visible if the camera catches it.

Should you use Space Sense on Quest 2?

The usefulness of Space Sense depends on the size of your space and your tolerance for distractions. If you’re playing in a small room and objects fall within your guardian, they will always be visible. However, since the camera doesn’t support high resolution, the object you outline will wander in mid-air; and you can’t just change the sensitivity so that the object appears next to you.

You also won’t know if someone’s behind you, though we wouldn’t put that on a front-facing camera-only headset.

In short, Space Sense works best if you have a dedicated VR space that people rarely enter, so it can protect you and others in rare cases. What if you are continuously Looking at “perceived” objects while playing the best Quest 2 games can make you lose your sense of immersion.

Some games (like Blaston) include a pass-through feature like Space Sense even if you disable Space Sense, but it’s not a common feature.

It will likely work better on the Oculus Quest Pro, which is said to have a better camera designed for AR pass-through.

As for the Quest 2, it’s still the best headset if you have an isolated space where pets and people are less likely to step on. But if you live in a crowded household, you can enable multiple accounts on the Quest 2 to let your family and friends invest in VR with you.
