Samsung announces Galaxy Watch 4 update, says Google Assistant still on

by GizmoShot | Published On February 8, 2022

The arrival of Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4 can’t come soon enough.

What you need to know

  • Samsung is rolling out a new update for the Galaxy Watch 4 with new watch faces and an improved settings experience.
  • Updated health features include more comprehensive body composition insights and sleep coaching programs.
  • Upcoming features include Google Assistant for the YouTube Music app and Wi-Fi or LTE streaming.

Samsung has announced a new update for the Galaxy Watch 4, offering users new health features, watch faces and an improved setup process. Additionally, Samsung provided an update on the availability of Google Assistant, which it teased after the watch was released.

With this new update, Samsung has partnered with Chris Hemsworth’s Centr fitness program to gain a deeper understanding of a person’s body composition. These insights will be available in the Samsung Health app and powered by Centr, while Samsung is also offering users a 30-day free trial of the full Centr app. Plus, the Galaxy Watch 4 is getting new interval goal training, perfect for runners and cyclists.

Additionally, Samsung is promoting better sleep with a new sleep coaching program that will assess your sleep over the week and assign you a sleep symbol animal based on your patterns. From there, the app will guide you on ways to improve your sleep habits, and if your Galaxy Watch 4 detects that you’re asleep, it’ll be able to automatically turn off SmartThings-controlled lights.

Samsung is also introducing new watch faces and straps, so users can get new ways to customize their watch. The bands will go on sale in late February.

When setting up your new Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung simplifies the process by allowing you to choose which apps to install, similar to the setup process on many of the best Android phones.

The most exciting news, however, is that Samsung is still working on bringing Google Assistant to the Galaxy Watch 4. That’s good news for those who prefer Google’s virtual assistant to Bixby. The company teased the availability of the Galaxy Watch 4 after its release, but a few months later, we haven’t seen it yet. However, Samsung says it will be available “in the next few months,” so we’ll have to wait a bit longer.

Finally, another upcoming update will allow users to stream YouTube music over Wi-Fi and LTE. Currently, Wear OS apps can only stream downloaded content for offline listening, so this should give users more flexibility.

Galaxy Watch 4 owners will receive a new health-focused software update on February 9, the same day as the Galaxy Unpacked event.
