what you need to know

  • DSCC’s quarterly foldable display shipments and technologies report showed that Samsung single-handedly dominated the foldable smartphone market last quarter.
  • According to the report, Samsung’s market share in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 96%.
  • Samsung holds an 87% share of the foldable smartphone market for all of 2021.

According to DSCC’s latest quarterly foldable display shipments and technologies report, foldable smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021 increased by 520% year-on-year to 4.25 million units. The report also shows that Samsung leads the foldable market with a whopping 96% share. The company shipped 4.1 million foldable phones between October and December.

For the full year, Samsung had an 87% share of the 8 million foldable market. In 2020, Samsung held an 86% share of the 2.3 million unit market. Huawei is the second-largest foldable smartphone supplier in 2021 with a 9% market share.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the most popular foldable in Q4 2021 with a 59% share. It also captured an impressive 51% share for all of 2021. The second most popular foldable device in 2021 is the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with a 26% share.

Foldable smartphone revenue grew 342% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2021 to a record $5.8 billion. Samsung also had an impressive 92% revenue share in the quarter.

While only four companies shipped foldable phones in the fourth quarter of 2021, DSCC expects that number to increase to six by the end of the first quarter of 2022 and eleven by the end of the year. Google, TCL and Vivo are some of the brands expected to launch new devices later this year to challenge Samsung’s best foldable phones.

Samsung could lose some of its edge as more companies enter the market. However, DSCC believes that the South Korean tech giant is still able to continue to dominate the market because of its “significant impact on the foldable display supply chain.”
