The Galaxy Note brand is dead, and absolutely no one should be surprised.
what you need to know
- Samsung’s head of mobile experience confirmed that the Galaxy Note branding is no more.
- He said future “Ultra” smartphones will feature an S Pen.
- This comes after the launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra design.
With the launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it’s almost written on the wall that Samsung has done the Note series. Still, Samsung never said this was the end, at least not until MWC 2022.
According to Dailian (via The Verge), the head of Samsung’s smartphone division, Roh Tae-moon, told reporters that we should no longer count on Galaxy Note-branded smartphones. Instead, he said (through translation) “The Galaxy Note will come in the form of ‘Ultra’ every year in the future.”
The company skipped plans to launch the Galaxy Note in 2021, so that’s no surprise. Since the launch of the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the growing impact of a global chip shortage on the availability of the best Android phones, there have been signs everywhere that the company is preparing to ditch the Note brand.
Fortunately, that doesn’t seem to deter Note fans. Samsung recently announced record pre-orders for its Galaxy S22 series, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra leading with 60% of sales. However, Roh remains optimistic about the success of the latest device, saying “we’ll still have to wait and see.”
While we can expect the future of the Galaxy Note brand to rely on “Ultra” phones, rumor has it that Samsung is preparing to include a built-in S Pen in the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Expected to launch later this year, the foldable phone offers buyers a larger canvas for S Pen doodles without forcing users to buy a separate S Pen and case.
