What you need to know

  • Final Fantasy 16 is an upcoming role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix.
  • Square Enix said that although the team hopes to showcase the game in 2021, some development has been delayed.
  • “Final Fantasy 16” will be “Big Secret” sometime in the spring of 2022.

The upcoming Square Enix game “Final Fantasy 16” made its debut at the PS5 game show in September 2020. Since then, there has not been much information about the game, and no new trailers or major details have been revealed. Square Enix producer Naoki Yoshida shared on Monday that problems caused by the global pandemic have delayed Final Fantasy 16 for nearly six months. Therefore, the team’s current goal is to conduct a “big reveal” in the spring of 2022.

Final Fantasy 16 is at least developed exclusively as a limited-time PS5 console. Yoshida said that the team is trying to perfect the game as much as possible, and is “finishing” the cutscenes. Final Fantasy 16 is the latest mainline entry for the long-running franchise, focusing on multiple war kingdoms in the Valistea world.

The delay caused by the pandemic has affected other Square Enix games, and the Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster has been postponed to February 2022. At the same time, the launch of the Endwalker expansion pack of Final Fantasy 14 has seen server pressure, the game is no longer for sale and the developers are committed to optimizing the server for the existing player base.

Analysts pointed out that the delay caused by the pandemic may continue until 2022, and the current generation of game consoles will still be difficult to buy.
