These are the best replacement SSDs for your PS4

by GizmoShot | Published On January 31, 2022

So you decide you have to put a new hard drive in your PS4, and an external hard drive won’t fix it. This is one of those upgrades that may or may not significantly improve things, but if you can do it, why not? Most read and write speeds are comparable, but we’ll include them if it’s a deciding factor for you. Here are some of the best PS4 options you can get your hands on.

good at everything

Western Digital Blue

Employee selection

If you’re looking for a 1TB SSD at a great price, but would rather go by a better-known name, consider this Western Digital drive. You’ll get tons of storage, 560MB/s and 530MB/s read and write speeds, and a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Amazon $100

Good speed and reasonable price

Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5″ Internal SSD

This Crucial drive will get you some blazing SSD speeds — 560MB/s and 510MB/s read and write respectively — without breaking the bank. Plus, if anything goes wrong, you’re backed by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Amazon $59

better speed

Samsung 870 EVO 250GB 2.5″ SATA III Internal SSD

This Samsung Evo drive is slightly more expensive in size than the Crucial drive, but offers better performance, including faster write speeds. Plus, just like Crucial, you get a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

companies you know

SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD

SanDisk is best known for their memory cards, but did you know they make great solid state drives at low cost? you do now. Speeds are also pretty good compared to others on this list.

Where do you even start?

When you need something with more power and storage space than the best external hard drives, an SSD is your best bet. If you need an SSD and want a lot of storage, a 1TB drive might be the place to start. Sure, a 1TB drive will be more expensive than a 500GB drive, but the price hike will give you more room to play.

No matter how you get your work done, expanding the storage space in your PlayStation is a great quality of life upgrade. We love Western Digital Blue because it’s a name you can trust, but SanDisk is also a name you know, offering great products at reasonable prices.

Finally, if you need to save some money, you can always use the Seagate hybrid drive below, but a full SSD is better for you.

compromise

If you’re looking at all these SSD prices and feeling overwhelmed, I don’t blame you. Solid-state storage is still pretty expensive. If you still want to see the PS4’s speed increase, but want to save some money, there’s another option.

1TB Hybrid Storage

Seagate 500GB FireCuda Solid State Hybrid Drive

SSHD stands for Solid State Hybrid Drive. The elevator pitch for a drive like this is the SSD speed you’ll see for the price of a traditional drive. This claim is a bit dubious, I probably wouldn’t put one in my PC and expect the same performance as an SSD. That said, I would totally have one in my PlayStation. Upgrading from an existing PS4 drive to a hybrid drive like this should provide a significant speed boost at a reasonable price.
